The Original Tabella

In the Roman Republic, a tabella was an essential everyday messaging device: a shallow wooden frame filled with a thin layer of darkened beeswax. Romans used a sharp metal or bone instrument called a stylus to scratch letters into the wax, then erased the text by smoothing it over with the tool’s flat end. These tablets worked much like modern text messages or scratchpads — the primary medium for casual correspondence, business records, military dispatches, and schoolwork.

To send a secure letter, a Roman would bind two tablets face-to-face with string and stamp the knot with a personalized wax seal — so the recipient would know if it had been intercepted.

Because imported Egyptian papyrus was highly expensive, this durable, infinitely reusable wooden tablet became the practical backbone of daily written communication across the Roman world.
